Refreshing, funky blues-rock...
Alex McKown is a six times finalist in the British Blues Awards (2011 - 2016) and his songs have been played on radio stations all over the world, including several plays on the Paul Jones R&B show on BBC Radio 2.
Alex McKown was born in 1996 and he first picked up the guitar when he was 6 years of age. When Alex was 11 he started to have lessons from Samuel C Lees at Tameside Music Academy and a passion for the blues was ignited. Alex developed his performance skills by performing regularly at the blues jam at The Whittles in Oldham. Alex then started to listen to the artists appearing at the major blues festivals in the UK and met Hamilton Loomis from Texas. Hamilton kindly agreed to let Alex sit in on his 2009 UK tour and they struck up a great friendship with Hamilton guesting on Alex's second album. Alex first performed with his own band at The Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival in Colne at The Crown in 2009 when he was just 13 years old and this was followed by performances on the British Stage in 2010 & 2012. Alex also performed at the Zinc Blues Festival in France in 2011 having been talent spotted at Colne.
Alex normally performs as a power trio but he will be bringing a young stellar six piece band to The Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival. Alex commented "I'm excited to have the opportunity to bring a great band to the festival , it's been my dream to play at the Muni having watched many of my idols perform on that stage".
Alex and his band have also played at The Great British Rock and Blues Festival, Hebden Bridge Blues Festival, Bowness Bay Blues Festival, Nantwich Jazz and Blues Festival, Mold Soul and Blues Festival and the main stage at Newark Blues Festival on three occasions.
