Ones to watch - Wilko Johnson

Friday, 12th August 2016

You can almost hear the music! The UK’s favourite Blues Festival is almost upon us and to celebrate, we’ve got a real treat for you with this week’s ‘ones to watch’.

This week’s featured artist truly is Blues loyalty and is renowned throughout the music industry. He’s performed with the likes of Dr Feelgood, Roger Daltrey and The Blockheads and regularly performs to sell-out crowds all over the world. The musical accolades don’t stop there, Paul Weller described him as a legend with his musical style inspiring many hit songs by The Jam. He is of course, the one and only Wilko Johnson.

Wilko will headline our  International Stage on Sunday 28th and will bring a wealth of brilliance and showmanship to the Festival. Citing his musical influence from the legendary guitarist Mick Green, Wilko employs a finger-style, chop-chord strumming action which allows him to play both chords and lead at the same time.

When it comes to Blues musicians, Wilko Johnson has written himself into history – but his talents don’t stop there! His career took another twist when he landed the role of Ilyn Payne in the phenomenon that is Game of Thrones. (SPOILER ALERT – Skip to the next paragraph!) Wilko’s character will forever be known in the series as the executioner who beheaded Sean Bean’s character, Ned Stark.

Blues lovers and lovers of music alike are in for a real treat as an acclaimed music legend performs in Colne. Wilko will truly be one to watch at this year’s Festival.
